20 Jun: Argyll Rally – Entry List

… Dunoon Presents Argyll Stages Rally, 24/25 June …

Rd04 – KNC Groundworks Motorsport UK Scottish Rally Championship

It’s over 50 years since rally drivers first discovered the delights – and horrors – of Argyll when the first Burmah Castrol Rally took to the forests in 1970 whilst some drivers and co-drivers also had to endure the added ‘appeal’ of vertigo where forest roads hugged the contours of hills, glens and mountains.

It’s all so different now, where once the forests would welcome the arrival of rally cars, the sport is being ever so gently squeezed out in favour of other pursuits and pastimes. But Mull Car Club seized the day, and rallying is back in Argyll. After a hugely successful debut last year, this year’s Dunoon Presents Argyll Stages Rally will be run on sections of closed public roads. And if anyone thought his would be much more kind to the human anatomy and physiology, they were in for a shock. Argyll’s tarmac roads are every bit as challenging as its forest roads.

As a counter in two National and two Regional championships plus one historic series, this year’s event has attracted one heck of an entry with more stars than the Milky Way, although it will be interesting to see how the front runners in the KNC Groundworks Scottish Championship will fare against the ‘foreign’ invasion from the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally series.

As Round 4 of the Scottish series Dunoon also marks the half way point of this 7 round championship where David Bogie currently has a 2 point lead over Michael Binnie with Jock Armstrong a further 5 points behind.

Freddie Milne and Patrick Walsh head a full capacity 140 car entry in the absence of last year’s winners Meirion Evans and Jonathan Jackson, but it’s worth remembering that Milne was leading the rally and in line for outright victory till a penalty was applied for striking a chicane and he dropped to 3rd place. That should serve as a warning to this year’s competitors but also act as a spur to Freddie to win the one that got away!

The rally gets underway at 19.30 Hrs in Dunoon town centre on Friday evening 24th June with the first of four stages that evening and then re-starts on Saturday morning at 09.00 Hrs for a further eight stages before the Finish at Dunoon Stadium from 16.44 Hrs onwards.
