31 Jul: Tyneside Preview/Entry List

… Glendinnings of Prudhoe Tyneside Stages Rally In memory of Maurice Mabon, Sunday 4th August 2019 …

The title of this year’s event includes the phrase ‘In memory of Maurice Mabon’ a stalwart member of Alnwick & District Motor Club for almost 50 years until his untimely passing four days before last year’s rally. Maurice was typical of that very small band of men and women who are the backbone of many British motor sport clubs. Over the year he served as treasurer, secretary, editor of the club newsletter, entries secretary for the Tyneside and secretary of the meeting at autocrosses. He also acted as steward at smaller club events, marshalled on road and stage events, and he never, ever let the club down or brought it into any kind of disrepute. The sport badly needs more like Maurice.

That means Maurice missed out on last year’s thriller over the ranges. Peter Taylor and Andrew Roughhead scorched over the tarmac finishing over 2 minutes clear of the opposition in their Ford Fiesta WRC, and they’re back again for this weekend’s event.

Third overall last year Gordon Morrison and Calum MacPherson run at number two in the Subaru. Last year the Impreza was plagued with boiling brake fluid which hampered progress, and given their pace on the recent Mach1 Stages, they think the problem has been solved.

The top two will certainly have their work cut out this year. Fresh from a 4th placed finish on the Carryduff Forklift Down Rally a couple of weeks back, Daniel Harper runs at number 3 in his MINI JCW WRC. Behind him is the Fiesta S2000 of Graham Coffey while Stephen Petch is wheeling out his Hyundai Accent WRC for an airing in place of his Fiesta R5. Kevin Proctor rounds off the top six in his Fiesta S2000 while it will be good to see Andrew Fenwick and long time Mull supporter, Paul Kirtley back out on the stages.

With a route recce on the Saturday afternoon, the rally gets underway on Sunday morning at 08.30 Hrs with the first of 12 stages totalling some 61 miles.

Spectating is limited and very strictly controlled on the MOD Otterburn Ranges, but anyone venturing into the Northumbrian wilderness should look out for the green arrows and heed the Marshals instructions.
