This weekend, the two day rallying extravaganza that is the usedcarparts.co.uk Solway Coast Rally takes to the roads running through the Military Ranges at Dundrennan in the south west corner of Scotland.
On Saturday 4th Aug, the Senior Rally contenders will contest 8 Special Stages totalling some 40 miles of private roads commencing 09.00Hrs. On Sunday 5th it will be the turn of the Junior 1000 drivers and the Historic Rally competitors to take to the stages. They will contest 11 Stages in total with the first of the Historics leaving the Start line at 09.00Hrs and the Juniors following on at 09:46 Hrs.
The Senior event has a star studded entry with the bestest of friends and fiercest of rivals mark McCulloch and David Hardie filling the top two places. The Solway Coast has not been kind to Hardie in the past with a best of 2nd place in 2014 to show for it while breakages and problems have afflicted other appearances. On the other hand, Mark McCulloch has won it for the past 5 years in a row, and going for win number 6 – something that Hardie will no doubt be keen to prevent.
However, running at number 3 is Stephen Thompson who finished second last year first time out in a Fiesta R5 and he’ll be going for one better this year having hired the same car from the Buckley stable.
Then there is 4 times Solway winner Ian Paterson who’s been going well in the Cobble Shop Scottish Tarmack Championship this year as has Gordon Morrison and they will be joined by the volatile Lee Hastings who has been concentrating on Irish Tarmac over the past two seasons but has joined the ‘Solway party’ as it’s his home event. Add in the likes of John Marshall and local man Richard Dickson plus Ian Forgan and former Scottish Rally Champion Murray Grierson and you have a top ten that would be the envy of any British Championship round.
On Sunday a veritable swarm of genuine Minis will contest the Historic event along with a few Mk1 Escorts and a Hillman Imp – which should tickle the fancy of all the ‘auld gits’ who will be leaning on the fences having a look, a listen and a reminisce about the ‘guid aul’ days’.
Bringing things up to date on the Sunday, there will be 28 Juniors taking to the stages for the highlight of their season – proper tarmac roads. The 14-17 year olds relish the thought of driving on genuine roads as opposed to the more common circuit and airfield based events which feature in their championship across the UK and Ireland – hence the bigger than usual entry. What the 1 litre cars lack in outright speed appeal they more than make up with flat-out commitment and close competition.
Spectating is very restricted at this event although the Solway CC organisers endeavour to accommodate the genuine interest of local folks and rally fans from all over. There will be at least two Spectator Areas, both signposted with green arrows from the A711 Dundrennan/Kirkcudbright road. Park your cars where directed and then walk within the tape to the vantage points. Do not stray – remember, this is an active Military facility!
