14 May: Scottish Rally – Preview

… RSAC Scottish Rally, Saturday 19th May …

There’s a new look to the Scottish Rally this year, or a new look to the ‘two’ Scottish Rallies! Even before the MSA had relaxed its rules on seeding and running order, the RSAC organising team had been planning ahead with the result that there will be two quite separate events, albeit running through exactly the same stages. The 2 wheel drive bunch will start at 8.00am on Saturday morning with the 4 wheel drive brigade setting off at 11.00am.

There will be just the one Service Area halt during the day although the 2WD mob will actually be calling in to first service just as the 4WD contingent are setting out. The Start formalities and Service will be based at Lockerbie Lorry Park while the two rally Finishes will be staged in the High Street in Moffat later in the afternoon.

This is going to make gathering info and reporting on all crews on the event very difficult, although that is not a complaint as I firmly believe that rallies are first and foremost for competitors and not spectators. Speaking of spectators, viewing will be limited, but it looks as though the double run at Castle O’er offers the best options to see everyone, then ignore Service and hopefully catch the 4WD leaders at Rivox although it’s a stout climb to the viewing area.

Car parking will be an issue at both venues so be sure to get there early and park well off the road allowing other traffic to pass easily. Remember this is Dumfries & Galloway Polis country, and they can make themselves awfy busy when it suits them!

Another point worth reinforcing – take your litter home. The whole country is up in arms about plastic pollution these days so don’t give those who think the forests should be restricted to ramblers, wildlifers and birdwatchers any more ammunition to fire at us.

Goodness knows why a different location for a Rally Finish is thought to be a ‘good idea’ but that’s the plan this weekend. No doubt it has been done to appease the politicians and local businesses, and while that might be justification enough, it don’t half make life more difficult for others!

And there is one other major drawback to the rally Finish location, it’s just a bit too close to the Moffat Toffee Shop for my liking.

Spectator Info:
SS 2 & 4 – SolwayPrint Castle O’er:

First Cars Due 08:50 & 10:30 (2WD) and 11:50 & 13:30 (4WD)
Parking is available within the forest. Approach via the B723 from Lockerbie or Eskdalemuir and turn on to the forest road as arrowed. Care – this is also the competitor access to the stage. Turn right again to the car park area. There is limited parking overlooking the stage for early birds. Please park sensibly to one side of the road. Exit the car park by the same route – please give way to competitors on your way out. The viewing area is beside the car park. Please do not attempt to cross the burn as this is a prohibited area for safety reasons.

SS 5 – Western Nissan Rivox:
First cars due 12:15 (2WD) and 15:15 (4WD)

Access to the spectator area is off the B7076, 2.6 miles north of A74(M) Junction 15/A701. This venue gives extended and close up views of the cars through a fast section towards the end of the stage. The B7076 must not be obstructed. Park only on the northbound side and as far onto the verge as you can. There is no vehicle access to the stage and strictly no vehicle access or parking on the road past Middlegill and Cloffinburn. Any spectator vehicles accessing this road will result in stage cancellation.
It is just over a half a mile to walk (including a steep climb at the end) from the public road but is worth it. Please follow the instructions of the marshals at the stage crossing point.
Sorry, but this viewing area and the access route to it are not suitable for anyone of limited mobility, nor for push chairs or similar.
