01 Aug: Solway Coast Entry & Info

… usedcarparts.co.uk Solway Coast Rally, Sat/Sun 5/6 Aug …

It’s August, it’s holiday time, so pack your wellies and anoraks, it’s off to the Costa del Solway this weekend for the two day festival of fun and motoring frolics that is called the ‘usedcarparts.co.uk Solway Coast Rally’. It’s also a round of the Blackwood Plant Hire Scottish Tarmack Championship so there is a serious side to the affair.

However, the rally is in two parts. The STRC regulars take to the stages on the Saturday only whilst the 14-17 year olds take centre stage on Sunday with representatives from the four home nations. Quite a turn out for the 1 litre speedsters. New to the Sunday run is a separate but additional Historic Rally for Historics driving Historics, or any other age group driving Historics, with a whole dose of Minis taking part plus a couple of Scottish built cars – Hillman Avengers!

But crikey just look at the line-up for the Saturday thrash. Mark McCulloch (Evo9), first last year, and David Hardie (with his new Subaru) look all set to renew their intense battles over the past three years with hot-shot Greg McKnight (Evo9) entering the fray ahead of the number 4 seed, one Lee Hastings (Subaru). We haven’t seen much of Lee this year as he has been concentrating his efforts on the Triton Irish National Rally Championship where he currently leads his class. In other words, he’s well ready for the action on his home event.

Iain Wilson is another fast improving local running at number 5 just ahead of Ian Paterson and reigning Scottish Tarmack Champion John Marshall (2nd last year) all in Subarus. It’s not till we get to the number 8 seed that we find the first of the 2WD cars with Gary Adam (3rd last year) and Alan Kirkaldy in their Mk2s while the Subaru of Gordon Morrison rounds off the top ten.

What an entry for the club that is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, one of the longest running and most active clubs in the country.

And if you think that’s it, forget it. Nigel Feeney runs at 11 in his MINI WRC followed by Ian Forgan in the Hyundai Accent WRC. At 14 is Richard Dickson on his annual outing and yet despite his lack of mileage he goes well every year and gives a fright to those who least expect it. At 15 is Stephen Thompson, always quick in the Mk2, it would appear that he has acquired a Fiesta R5, then there’s regular visitor from the deep south, Steve Retchless in his Mk2 with young Taylor Gibb on his tail in the Lancer. Billy McClelland, Murray Grierson and Jim McDowall round off the top 20 in one of the most competitive looking line-ups you’ll ever see this side of the sun-rise.

Spectator Info:

You’ll have to check the Solway Car Club website for the latest info as the location of the rally is an active MOD facility. I don’t want to worry you, but they have armed guards and big dugs, so please dae as yer tellt – or else.

A spectator car park has been set up in a field just off the A711 Kirkcudbright to Dundrennan road so look out for the car parking signs and the green Spectator arrows. And don’t bring any of your own pets. The guard dogs are no respecters of other quadrupeds and anything smaller than them is likely to get eaten.

There will be at least two spectator areas on the Saturday and again on the Sunday, and they are both a stout walk up the hill (but it makes it easier coming down!) and the arrows will direct you to them. I also expect there will be maps and diagrams on the Solway Car Club website soon, so keep your eyes on that.

There will be 8 stages totalling 43 miles on the Saturday starting at 9.00am, and 9 stages totalling 36 miles on the Sunday starting at 9.15am.
