13 Jul: Mach 1 Entry & Preview

… Blackwood Plant Hire Scottish Tarmack Rally Championship …
Rd 5 – Mach 1 Stages, 15/16 July 2017 …

Last year’s Mach 1 Stages winner John Marshall will head the entry for this year’s event at the former military airbase at Machrihanish just outside Campbeltown in the Mull of Kintyre (cue for McCartney dirge?), but the man on the move at the moment is the number 6 seed Alan Kirkaldy with 3 wins from 3 events under his belt already.

In between those two are Bruce Edwards with the Darrian which should go well round the flat expanse of the airfield and similarly the Lotus of Alistair Inglis. Shaun Sinclair is a bit of a surprise with the Subaru WRC but Gary Adam should give Alan a run for his money too in his own Mk2.

Young Taylor Gibb should keep the old-timers on their toes and Gordon Morrison is getting awfy rapid these days, seeded down at number 14 with a certain Barry Groundwater right behind him. As for Nigel Feeney, looks like he’s got a new car, so that should be interesting.

Organised by Dunfermline CC, this year’s event has 12 stages totalling 88 miles over 2 days and although spectators are restricted from wandering around the stages under the new MSA rules, the observation areas offer a pretty good view of what’s going on and with this quality of entry, well worth the 5 quid per head.

Spectators from the north should head into Campbeltown on the A83 and then look out for and follow the GREEN arrows which takes them out the B843 to the signposted access to Spectator car parking up the West Park Fergus road. Entry costs £5 per person on Saturday which includes FREE entry on Sunday. On-site catering will be provided by Argyll Bakeries from Friday with hot and cold food, while Coast Coffee will supplement Argyll Bakeries’ full fayre offerings with their speciality Teas and Coffees. Oh, and one more thing, bring your wellies and brollies as well as your shorts and sun cream – be prepared for the Machrihanish micro-climate – but NO midges!

Also look out for the STRC ‘shop’ at Signing-On which will be stocked with motorsport goodies as well as copies of Bob Irvine’s ‘Scottish Rally Scene’ full colour magazine.

Added Extra – on the Friday evening between 6 & 7.30 pm in the large car park at the Campbeltown ferry terminal, DCC will have a number of competition cars on display and hopefully some competitors who will be able to answer any difficult questions from the locals and any other passers-by!
