… Beatson’s Mull Rally, 14-16 Oct, Timetable and Entry List …
The entry for this year’s Beatson’s Mull Rally is like a big bag of Revels serving up one tasty treat after another when you read through the list. Heading the entry is 9 times winner Calum Duffy and he’s taking the prospect of a 10th win very seriously. His weapon of choice this year is a Millington engined Skoda Fabia. He’s already had one test finishing the Clare Stages Rally in Ireland in 11th place overall and taking first in class, first time out. And he has another test planned before Mull!
Running at number 2 is twice victor Paul MacKinnon making a return to the rally, after saving up for the past 4 years, with 2013 winner John MacCrone at number 3 in a Ford Fiesta R5 and this is the man who finished 2nd to Duffy the year before in a Fiesta R2. It’s been 13 years since Daniel Harper last won Mull but he’s been on the podium 3 times since then in his BMW MINI. Jonathan Mounsey in an Evo 6 and Tristan Pye in a ‘new’ Subaru are next up ahead of John Cope in a Subaru who has been on the podium no less than 7 times in the last 15 years. That’s quite a record too.
Tony Bardy runs at 8 in a Ford Focus WRC ahead of 2005 winner James MacGillivray in a Subaru with Northern Ireland’s Derek McGeehan rounding off the top ten in his MINI WRC. And there’s more. Just outside the top ten are Lewis Gallagher and Eddie O’Donnell Jnr while Mull ‘debutant’ David Bogie will carry the number 14 on the door of his Escort Mk2.
Others to look out for include the Beatson’s Boys, Ross and John Marshall, with the boy (Ross) out to beat the ol’ man (John) in this annual son/father duel. Ross Hunter will be worth a watch in his deceivingly rapid 2 litre Peugeot 205 and how will Greg McKnight do in his Mk2? And then there are the nutters (in the nicest possible way!) led by Mike Storrar in his Honda engined Morris Marina and Shooey Steel in a Mk2. And if you see smoke coming from Shooey’s car, it won’t be the engine, that’ll be the fags billowing out the side window.
And for a bit of historical interest look out for the beautiful Saab 96 V4 of Paul Darlington and Malcolm Ball’s Triumph TR6. And if you get the chance, check out the dashboard mounted lipstick holder in the Rover Mini of Louise Thomas and Emily Easton-Page. These girls are like Girl Scouts – Always Prepared!
