06 Aug: Solway Coast Entry List

… usedcarparts.co.uk Solway Coast Rally …

2013_DundrennanIt’s that time of year again when the sparkling blue waters and white golden sands of the Costa del Solway attract tourists and holidaymakers from all corners of the UK to the south west corner of Scotland. There are no buckets and spades, just snap-on tool boxes and trolley jacks. That’s because this is the social rallying event of the mainland season, the ‘usedcarparts.co.uk Solway Coast Rally’ on Saturday and Sunday, 8/9 August.

There’s a bigger entry this year and that’s simply down to demand. The reputation of this event far exceeds the capacity of Dundrennan. Which gave the Solway CC organisers a real headache. Do they turn away entries? Or do they reduce the mileage to fit them in?

Remember this is an active MOD facility and whilst the guys there are great, the rally folks are governed by a strict timetable, no starting before 9 and no finishing after 5. Those are the rules hence the tough dilemma.

Also this year there are more restrictions on spectators. This has nothing to do with the organisers or the MOD, this is down to the ‘new order’ sweeping across rallying. No longer can we rely on common sense and personal responsibility to keep people safe, the eedjits have ruined it for the majority.

To that end, the organisers have arranged a couple of car parks and a couple of decent viewing areas, and since each stage is done three times during the day, the cars will come to you, rather than chasing them. Full details and maps are on the website:
http://www.solwaycarclub.co.uk/uploads/UCPSCR%202015/2015%20UCPSCR%20Spectator%20Information.pdf

And what an entry they’ve got. Previous winner Mark McCulloch heads a quality field with British Asphalt Rally Championship front runner David Hardie at number 2, and both local boys, and both up fir the fight! Rory Young has hired Dom Buckley Jnr’s Fiesta R5 again while ‘the Adam family’ are bringing their tyre shredding Mk2 and will run at 4. There’s another local crew at 5 with Ian Paterson in the Subaru and Ayrshire’s Stuart Baillie now back on the pace in his Subaru after a wee holiday in hospital. James Ford is coming up from Englandshire with his Subaru while Richard Dickson has blown the cobwebs off his own Subaru ready for its annual outing. Jim Sharp runs at 9 in his Lancer while the ‘lucky white heather club’s’ Lee Hastings rounds off the top ten in another Subaru.

But just outside the top ten lies a big (or very small?) threat, the Lotus Exige of Alistair Inglis who won last month’s Mach1 Stages Rally by ONE second from Gary Adam in the Escort. Right behind him are Nigel Feeney and Colin Gemmell who finished THREE seconds apart on the Mach1, so there are quite a few rivalries building up ahead of this weekend. Then there’s Steve Retchless in his rapid Escort, Hamish Kinloch with his Honda powered Escort, Stuart Paterson in his Subaru and the Skoda Fabvia of Stuart Walker. Rounding off the top 230 is James Ford’s dad Chris with his S11 Impreza following his recent victory on the Enville Stages. Oh, and by the way, he beat his son James on that event as James finished 4th, so a bit of intense family rivalry here too. And the quality goes on, Iain Wilson, Stephen Thompson, Barry Renwick in his Millington Escort and Alan Kirkaldy provided he’s got his new engine and sequential shift sorted.

Crikey, what a rally, what a prospect. I can’t wait.

The Senior rally starts at 09.00Hrs on Saturday morning and should be all done by 15.30Hrs in the afternoon with the event prizegiving being staged no earlier than 16.30Hrs at the earliest, and then the winner has to buy everyone a round of drinks in the bar – not. I just made that up.

The Junior rally on Sunday starts 09:01Hrs provided the parents can get them all up in time and should be all done by 15.00Hrs with the prizegiving not before 16.00Hrs
