09 Jul: Mach 1 Stages Entry List

… Mach 1 Stages Rally …

The second ever Mach 1 Stages takes to the old Machrihanish airfield this weekend for a two day frenzy of tyre shredding and bale bowfing, but only for the untidy that is. Flushed with success from last year’s sterling efforts, the Dunfermline Car Club team has big plans for this year’s fourth round of the Blackwood Plant Hire Scottish Tarmack Championship and have been rewarded with an entry list that totals some 113 runners and riders – that’s a baker’s dozen more than last year.

Apart from the obvious stars at the top end of the field there are a number of other interesting entries. Calum Duffy will have his first proper run out on ‘home’ soil in his new Subaru Impreza and Jamie Smith is fully expecting to debut his Nissan V6 engined Ford Fiesta while Gareth White has got himself a Citroen DS3 R3T.

A sight to be avoided (at least stand well back) is Freddie Milne in a Mk2 and perhaps stand a bit further back if you see Rod MacFarlane in his new Opel Manta. It’s so long since he’s sat in a rally car I’m surprised his oxters haven’t seized up. One of the most sophisticated rally cars here (not!) will be the MG TF of Gary Ross. When he appeared at Ingliston with it, all it had was the requisite safety stuff and a set of Mintex pads. Everything else was bog standard.

Fancy a punt this weekend? It would appear that there is a big bet between Fred McLean and Freddy Lockhart (Stephen’s Dad) about who will finish higher up the results sheets by Sunday afternoon. Freddy has never driven the Lancer before and Fred is more usually seen on the business end of a spanner with Shaun Sinclair’s motors. They’re ‘well seeded’ at 102 and 103 but if you have tender ears stand well back from the banter.

There will be 12 stages this weekend totalling 72 miles of pretty much all-tarmac stages. I think the plan is for 8 stages on Saturday afternoon and 4 on Sunday morning.
