28 Oct: Kingdom Stages Entry List

… Kingdom Stages Rally, Crail, Sat 1 November …

This weekend’s Kingdom Stages will bring the 2014 BLUE Scottish Tarmack Rally Championship to a close and to celebrate the fact that Winter is coming and stage rally withdrawal symptoms will set in fairly soon, the organisers have got a huge entry of 100 cars and crews.

That means a prompt start at 08.30 Hrs on Saturday morning for the first of 8 Special Stages, totalling some 58 miles of ‘fit tae the flair’ action.

And what an entry. It looks like Alistair Inglis is joining the motorised skate board club alongside Bruce Edwards. Winner of the past two Kingdoms, Alistair has got himself a Lotus Exige, only slightly more civilised than Brucie’s V6 powered Darrian frisbee.

John Rintoul is getting the hang of his Hyundai these days and will be a force to be reckoned with this weekend, as will that master of old technology, Tom Morris in the Metro. In fact the whole of the top 20 looks distinctly handy and includes Colin Gemmell’s Subaru which should have the long promised 3 litre flat six in the nose of his Impreza.

Just outside the top 20, Barry Renwick has promised to bring along his VW Polo S2000 and having seen him in that tyre-shredding Millington MkII, this should be worth seeing too. Andrew Gallacher has entered the Ford Escort Cosworth last seen on the Solway Coast Rally – with his sponsor alongside, and by the way, he owns the car. So best behaviour behind the wheel. I think not. Gordon Winning’s toughest task this weekend will be wire brushing the cobwebs out of his oxters and Kieran O’Kane will no doubt leave a trail of burnt rubber and BLUE smoke behind him all the way.

If Graeme Schoneville gets a wee bit of luck this weekend, and keeps it out of the long grass, then the Honda’s 23,000 rpm (approx?) limit will be sore on the ears. And speaking of Honda engines, Ian Shiells whose previous unit did itself a fair impression of an IED at the Mach 1 now has a straight six under the bonnet. All this, and more next Saturday, at Crail, that well kept sunscorched secret on the north eastern tip of the Kingdom of Fife. Bring your sunscreen, dark glasses and flip flops for a day out by the seaside – but no Speedos please, think of the wildlife.
