Grant Construction Stages Rally, Sunday 8th January

The Scottish rallying season gets underway again this coming Sunday the 8th of January when Border Ecosse Car Clubs hosts its Grant Construction Stages Rally at Knockhill. This time last year, the circuit was under two feet of snow and it was a hoot all day. The 'Strictly Come Skating' approach to rallying may not have been the fastest form of motor sport but it was highly entertaining.

At the moment, the only white stuff on the hill overlooking the circuit are sheeps so fingers crossed that it stays that way. There are over 40 entries this year including last year’s winners John and Jim Rintoul and there appears to be quite a few new cars as well.

The event will be a counter in the 2011 Scottish Borders Rally Championship and 2011 Border Ecosse Car Club Championship and the first round of the 2012 Scottish Tarmac Rally Championship.

The first stage will start at 8.30 am and although the final stage is scheduled to start at 3:10 pm and finish at 3:50 pm, sunset is expected to arrive around 4 pm! The cars will be flagged off at 30 second starts so the action will be fast and furious, as opposed to slightly slower and awfy slidey.

And here’s a nice touch, Knockhill have promised to open at least one restaurant on Sunday, and the car club have ensured that Marshals will get priority in the queue. Nice one youse yins!

There will be an entry fee for spectators of £8 (£4 conc./U12 free) but only a fiver if you book in advance on the Knockhill website.  However, when I tried it, there was a telephone message saying the circuit was shut until Friday the 6th of January!

Naturally there will be a full report on the affair up on the website next week after the rally - I'm aiming for Tuesday night, but don't hold me to it as I'm still recovering from the New Year staff pairty.
