Jaggy Bunnet Rally News - September 27, 2011

Scots Abroad

The reason that Alister McRae won't be at this weekend's Colin McRae Stages Rally is that he will be competing on the Rally Hokkaido in Japan, the latest round of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship. Along with Aussie team-mate, he will be driving a Proton Satria Neo S2000 car. Atkinson currently leads the Championship with Alister in second place, but Proton could tie up the manufacturer's title this weekend.

Talking of his chances, Alister said: "We found last year that this is a pretty tough event for Super 2000 cars, with a lot of very long straights. The team has made some changes to the gear ratios this time around, so we will have a higher top speed. At the same time, we're always going to struggle to match the higher speed of the conventional Group N cars with their turbochargers. But that's not going to stop us trying. I enjoyed this event last year and led it for a while. We're targeting a win in Japan, but as well as the local drivers, I think our biggest rival could be the Australian guy in the other yellow car! Chris [Atkinson] has had a very good year and he's going to be tough for us to beat. But, if we want the championship, that's what we're going to have to do."

Rally Hokkaido is based in Obihiro, Japan and has 19 stages totalling 223 kms. It starts on Friday evening with a 1.2 km Super Special then gets underway properly o Saturday morning, finishing just after mid day on Sunday.

More Scots Abroad - in Yorkshire

Bogie and Rae
Pearson and
Alex Laffey
Now I'm sure we're all aware by this time but David Bogie and Kevin Rae have won the 2011 Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship. Three wins and never off the podium ensured they became only the second ever Scottish crew to win the British title after Collin and Derek did it in the early 90s. They did what they had to do in Yorkshire - finish! So there were no heroics and no fighting for the lead. Following the shock news that the Manx had been cancelled all that was needed was a top 13 finish and the title was theirs.

So if anyone thinks it's easy just cruising for a finish, forget it. On the last loop of stages David was so strung out with the tension and worry of something going wrong that he felt physically sick during the last stage and had to open the driver's door window - just in case!

At the finish David said: "It's hard to sum up how I feel. I've been chasing this result all year and the dream has now come true. This has been the hardest rally of my life by far. I had to make sure we got to the finish and we did everything possible to achieve this. To win the title is a reward for everyone who has supported me: the team, my family and, of course Kevin, who has done a great job. It's a huge achievement and I still can't quite believe it!"

There were some more excellent results on Rally Yorkshire. Young Peter Taylor finished fifth overall in the Clio, just missing out on 4th place by 12 seconds while Alex Laffey got his Fiesta home in 14th place getting his confidence back after his crash in Ulster last month.

And there was more good news from the north end of the deep south, young Garry Pearson and Laura Marshall clinched the 'Stars of the Future Award' in the Dulux British Championship Challenge by winning their Class in Yorkshire.

And I'm sure we can all imagine Monty standing over Garry and having a quiet word: "Bring it home in one piece", as the car was up for sale after the rally! Even so he scored a remarkable seventh overall in the one litre Nissan Micra. In fact he was the fastest R1 car on every stage. What's the betting Monty was having severe palpitations every time he saw those fastest stage times?

Garry also secured 5th overall and the highest placed Scotsman in the BRC Challenge.

2011 Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship - Leaderboard:
1 David Bogie 110
2 Elfyn Evans 100
3 Jonny Greer 95
4 Marty McCormack 74

Rally Forum in Aberfeldy, Friday evening, 30th September
8 for 8.30 pm

Ahead of Saturday's rally there will be a ticket-only charity Forum night at the Moness Resort just outside the town organised by the Colin McRae Vision.

Honoured guests will include Stig Blomqvist, Jim McRae, Phil Mills and David Bogie, and that awfy nice big chap John Fife will be the host and inquisitor.

Doors will open at 8.00 pm with the chat show getting underway at 8.30 pm. The organisers are also planning a couple of other wee surprises and immediately after the Forum there will be a short auction for some attractive prizes and highly collectable memorabilia. And since entry to the Forum is free, bids are consequently expected to be generous!

The Moness Resort is on the Crieff road to the south of Aberfeldy and Forum entry is by ticket only, as the function suite is limited to 160 - but the tickets are free.
