ProTune Remapping Merrick Stages, Saturday 3rd September
( Spectator Info and Full Entry List below) - Scroll down all the way!
Mike Faulkner and Euan Thorburn top the entry list for this Saturday's ProTune Remapping Merrick Stages at Wigtown. With two rounds of the Scottish Championship to go, the two are neck and neck at the top of the points tables - but behind David Bogie.
Unfortunately, David won't make his local forest event, a big disappointment for himself, as well as his family and friends. The Lancer has gone away to the auto-doctor in Lancs for a check-up ahead of the sixth and penultimate round of the Dulux British Championship, Rally Yorkshire in three weeks time, which David and co-driver Kevin Rae are currently leading.
On that basis all eyes will be focussed on the nail-biter between Mike and Euan. They finished 14 seconds apart at the end of the Gleaner Oil & Gas event, but having set identical times on four of the day's eight stages they went into the last stage tied on tied on the same total. Whoever blinked first would lose out - and that was Mike.
He admitted to an overshoot when on the limit, so now there is another tie to resolve. They both lie second equal in Scotland's top motor sporting championship with two rounds to go.
The Merrick will also see a resumption of that close fought battle between our own Robbie Head and Northern Ireland's Phillip Morrow. The two of them finished the rally 10 seconds apart, but Phillip got docked a 6 minute road penalty. How unhospitable was that?
Also joining the fray is Bogie's arch-nemesis, Jonny Greer, keen to get some forest mileage ahead of Rally Yorkshire. He finished just over 5 seconds behind Bogie in Ulster, so there's much to do in Yorkshire.
Missing from the Entry List is Jock Armstrong who bumped his Subaru on Speyside, and when he got it home and up on ramps, found there was a wee bit more damage than he thought. He's also contemplating his options. With the Subaru about to run out of GrpN homologation, he's wondering if he should stick with the spec he knows or go for something with bigger brakes, better suspension and more powerful engine?
Young Irish star Desi Henry (Citroen C2 R2 Max) is a late entry, and will be slotted in on Friday.

Skye Gravel Sprint
Dougal Brown scored his first ever event win on Saturday when he won the second Skye Gravel Sprint. After six runs of the 1.9 mile stage, his best time was 1m 49.6s. David Ross was second in his EVO6 from the Subaru of Kevin Ronaldson.
Reay MacKay completed only one run before retiring the Metro: “The wishbones were still bent after the last time we had the car out,” he said, “but I wanted to support the Skye event so we went along. The wishbones were fine, but I broke the exhaust so that was that.”
There were 29 starters for this year’s event and hundreds of spectators lining the road. “It’s a pretty good stage,” said Dougal, “there are 14 crests and some blind bits so it’s a serious bit of road. The best thing is, it doesn’t cut up on the start line so times can get better during the day.”
Finishing 12th overall was Murdo Graham, making his second appearance on the Skye Gravel Sprint with Sandy Morrison’s 4WD Sierra: “Last year was my first time out for 24 years,” said the former MkI and MkII front runner, “so this is looking like my annual outing. Och, I enjoyed it though, it’s nice to get in a car again and just keep my hand in!”

Looking back on Rally Hebrides.
Although not a 'rally' in the accepted sense of the word, or even a 'ompetition' as such, the event which was run a couple of weeks ago, was another resounding success by all accounts.
George and Jacqueline Bryson took the MkI up north for its Summer hols and thoroughly enjoyed themselves by all accounts. As George said: "It was another cracking weekend from Lewis Car Club and it looks like they raised over £16k for MacMillan Cancer Relief as a result."
"We had a brilliant time even though we slid off on stage 3 when the remote for the trip meter came adrift and knocked off the ignition as I tried to flick it for a Left 9. To be fair I probably was carrying too much speed anyway as it was in the spectator area and was getting a bit carried away!"
"It came to rest doon a bank and against a fence and when we returned to service Big Hamish asked me if I hadn't made up my mind what I thought about the event."
"Unsure what he meant, I asked what he was talking about to which he replied 'I heard you were sitting on the fence!' "Apparently it took him 20 minutes to think that one up."
"Fantastic weekend and all for a good cause. It's totally amazing the work that Lewis Car Club do to organise this and the whole island seems to get behind the event including the Polis who escort the convoy of cars through the town to get to the spectator special stages at the Kart track. They also stop all the traffic to let the convoy through and the whole town stops to see the convoy. Really special."
"Also, where else would you be allowed to take down an airport perimeter fence to extend a stage through the airport grounds and finish the stage through a Nato fuel dump?" Aye, where indeed!
George
